MaZi Dance Chicago*: Spotlight on Jessica!

MaZi Dance Chicago*: Spotlight on Jessica!

Ethereal Beauty, Jessica!
EDDO Photography

Jessica has been dancing with us since 2010 and is pure radiance! The first thing you notice about her in classes is her work ethic and in choreography, her intellectual approach. Even though there's so much substance behind the surface, when you see her dance it's pure joy as her movement defines "being present". She makes every choreography authentically her own, ranging from pure hip hop to lyrical, it's impossible not to watch her!  When she's not lighting up the stage, Jessica is a strategy consultant and travels most of the time. We admire her commitment to doing something she loves while still having an extremely demanding career, which is the case for many MDC dancers!

IN HER OWN WORDS:

Why do you dance?

The reason I dance is because it’s one of the rare activities in my life where I experience a state of flow. Flow is best described in my opinion by Cziksentmihalyi’s, “…as a state in which a person is so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience is so enjoyable that the person will continue to do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.” Dance is not an escape from reality; rather, dance allows me to move in the present.

What does MaZi mean to you?

Mazi is family. Mazi is strength. Mazi is community. Mazi is comfort. Mazi is courage. Mazi is beautiful. Mazi is unique. Mazi is strength. Mazi is growth. Mazi is you.

We look forward to whatever Jessica does next in her professional life as a strategy guru and on stage!
FLOWING!

My favorite quick mini-meals right now!

Mini-meals are the norm for me because it's very difficult to be active and/or alert on a full tummy! In each of these I try to include fat, fiber and protein to balance my blood sugar levels, give me energy and keep me full. If I don't get at least 2 of these nutrients in my mini-meal I'm starving in 30 minutes. This is what I'm currently loving right now:

EATING ON THE RUN! This yummy bar is unprocessed, organic, alkaline, gluten-free and Fair Trade!

1) Creamy sweetness!
Fage 2% yogurt (more filling and less sugar than 0%) topped with 1/2 of a cup of Trader Joe's Fiber cereal or Fiber One 80 calorie chocolate cereal and a hand shredded organic date for sweetness. (approx. 275 calories)

2) For the Greenies! (pictured above)
Green SuperFood-unprocessed and organic bar that is very tasty and filling! (230-260 calories depending on flavor)

3) Super Filling!
Applegate Chicken & Maple Sausage (2) and a fried whole egg and a piece of Ezekiel bread with butter schmear. (approx. 300-350 calories depending on your butter schmear)

4) You can take the girl out of TX.....
Quesadilla- heat one corn tortilla topped with a serving of good cheese of your choice (I like Havarti) and 1/4 of an avocado. (approx. 300 calories)

5) Back to kindergarten!
Gluten-Free S'moreables Graham Style Crackers (3) topped with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and reduced sugar strawberry jelly and a piece of string cheese. (approx. 350 calories)
Found at Whole Foods, they're better than regular grahams!
6) Very NYC or LA snack!
Spruts Nuts Almonds serving (yummy sprouted almonds, perfectly salted!) with green kale juice that you can find anywhere nowadays, i.e. Whole Foods, Starbucks, etc. (approx. 300-350 calories)

These take under 5 minutes to prepare, so there's no excuse to go hungry and make bad choices later on! What are some of your quick mini-meals?

Ballerina Bump Series: Morning Sickness & Cravings

Diving into a Red Velvet Pointe Shoe cupcake, 6 months pregnant!
Ballerina Bump Series: Morning Sickness & Cravings

"YOU ARE NOT EATING FOR TWO. You can drink a glass of nonfat milk with every meal to get your additional calorie/calcium needs."  These were the first sentences my doctor uttered after I asked how much more I should be eating. OK then. :(

Figuring out what to eat when you're NOT pregnant is hard enough.....when you add the pregnancy factor, it's daunting! Many of us try to maintain a healthy diet, figuring out what works for our body, what causes inflammation, what we are allergic/sensitive to, etc. When you're pregnant, it all goes out the window. You're in survival mode; what can I picture swallowing and keeping down?  I seem to be faring better than some in the morning sickness department and it is still preeeettty, preeeettty bad.

A typical day for my "before" was lots of lean animal & dairy protein, no yeast, limited gluten, plenty of espresso, 3-4 wines glasses/week, sushi, and vegtables. My "after" is vastly different. I can't stomach much animal protein at all, it was months before I could even think about having eggs, chicken or turkey. A fruit hater before, I am now consuming comical amounts of fruits, especially grapes and grapefruit.

When you first get THE LIST of everything you can't have, it's kind of annoying. But then you realize that you don't even want MOST things on the list. I like to think that it's your body's way of protecting the baby. For example, since the age of 12 (not really, but kinda) I've had a Venti Americano in my hand before noon every day of my life. Now, even the days I do get a tall coffee out of habit, I take 2 sips and I'm donesky!

Here's what morning sickness taught me:

1) It's not in the morning, it's all DAY! Make that all day and night.
2) You can't get hungry or you'll awaken the nausea monster. GRR
3) [This] is not an all you can eat pass, if you start eating badly (especially if you didn't before), your body will not like you.
4) You are not in charge of what you can keep down anymore. Don't force your old diet on yourself. If all you can picture is eating is pretzels then guess what?! That's what you're having!
5) You WILL, I repeat, You WILL feel better if you move and exercise. Force yourself....on your most nauseous days, just do it! It truly helps!
6) You will punch anyone that gives you advice on how to control morning sickness. ;)
7) Stay hydrated. Coffee is not your friend, don't even think about diet coke.
8) Experiment with your pre-natal vitamin, sometimes a tweak in brand or time of day can make a difference if you're getting headaches.
9) Take naps! When your little body gets too tired, that nausea will creep back in.
10) It's a balancing act, be active, don't get too tired, eat enough but not so that you get reflux, stay hydrated but just enough to where you don't have to pee all through the night.

And finally, just "for fun" these are some of the items that I craved the most so far:

1st trimester: Yoplait Greek yogurt, Rold Gold Pretzels (very 1995), Velveeta, as in the chemical cheese product found by the dog food at grocery stores

2nd trimester: Fruit, any and all! Slurpees (very 1995). Mixed greens with balsamic vinagrette. Cadbury's Fruit & Nut chocolate, proscuitto (a Listeria no-no!)

3rd trimester: Ice (can't get enough even though it's minus 20 degrees outside), Pink Himalyian Salt on anything, SALT, Kettle's Salt & Vinegar chips, Beef Jerky preferably from Sable, SALT and SPRUTS (a sprouted almond treat with lots of sea salt)

Again, these are just observations from my experience because I can't get enough of wanting to know if I'm normal or not from other women that have had kids! This is not medical advice, just documentation of my own journey of what has worked and not worked for me. Wishing every expectant or wanting to be expectant mom the very best!

At the peak of my slurpee & beef jerky era!

MaZi Dance Chicago: Spotlight on Stacy!

MaZi Dance Chicago*: Spotlight on Stacy!

The one and only Stacy!

Stacy is very special to MaZi! She started taking classes and performing with us in 2009. Since then, she has performed in countless venues with MaZi, taken every class, is team captain of MaZi Dance Chicago* and has now begun teaching B-Girl Hip Hop at South Loop.

Her photographic memory, unique movement quality and fearless stage presence make her extremely memorable in every piece that she's in and class she takes. She has been my muse for almost 5 years and to this day I have not seen anything she cannot do. Stacy is committed to dance fitness and healthy living, and inside and out Stacy is a beautiful person which shines through when she dances! On her spare time she's THISCLOSE to being Dr. Stacy!!

IN HER OWN WORDS:

Why Do You Dance: "Dance is my happiness."

What does MaZi mean to you? "MaZi has been my home away from home."

Catch her in then next MaZi Dance Chicago performance or Tuesdays at South Loop for B-Girl HipHop!

How your ballet background makes a difference?
Ballet has taught me how to align, strengthen, and lengthen my body. It makes a difference in terms of stabilizing in one area of the body to move more freely in another.

What does Love. Dance. Live. mean to you?
Love. Dance. Live. To me, none of these words can sand with out the others. I have learned so much about life and love through dance. As a dancer, you practice and train every day, and over time you gain the ability use your own body as an instrument. Dance has taught me that with dedication and consistency one can achieve anything. What you put in is what you get out.

Ballerina Bump Series: 10 Tested Beauty & Body Tips

Ballerina Bump by Monika Pawlak Better Looking Photography

In this post of Ballerina Bump Series, I'd like to cover a few things that have kept me feeling "pretty" or at least like I wasn't giving up entirely. Some of the products or tips listed below are about beauty, but also about feeling comfortable in your own skin during this happy, challenging time. For your health and sanity keep on keeping on! I have compiled some of the things that have helped me rock it (at least in my head)! :)

1) LEGS
Lucky Legs by Mama Mio- Without this product I don't sleep a wink since I have a wicked case of restless leg syndrome (RLS) and my legs just fly up in the air right as I'm about to fall asleep. It also minimizes swelling in the legs, so I go through a lot of this! $20 per bottle, worth every penny.

2) FACE
SK II Essential Power $175 & Black African Soap $5- If you don't know what "pregnancy mask" is, you might soon in your first weeks! Thanks to hormonal changes, your skin starts to develop blotchy patches of discoloration called melasma, a condition I was prone to before pregnancy. Thanks to this wonder, nada! African Black Soap is a $5 bar of all natural soap found at Whole Foods that is key in managing breakouts, especially when you can't use your favorite acne medications.

3) TEETH
MI Paste & Peridex- You can get these at your dentist. With pregnancy your gums are very vulnerable which translates to gum disease, cavities and other horrors. You need to be extra diligent with your dental care if you want to prevent future major issues. These 2 products help your gums stay healthy and protect from the volatility occuring in your mouth. Each around $20.

4) BODY
Massage & Adjustments- Everything is shifting, you're sore, swollen and just plain achy! I used my 2 favorite body work places regularly to feel better. For massage, it doesn't get more comforting, relaxing and effective (this is like drugs sister!) than a massage than from Terri & her team at Urban Wellness Chicago. For adjustments, headaches and nutritional tweaks, there is no better wizard than Dr. Pontarelli at Windy City Wellness.

5) INSIDES
EFA's & high quality probiotic- Essential fatty acids in liquid form (available at Windy City Wellness) are great for reducing inflammation, baby's brain development, preventing pre-term labor and quench many cravings (pregnant or not). You can get a good, high quality probiotic from your doctor. Keeping your digestive system happy and running is always a good thing, and in pregnancy it's everything.

6) SHOES & ACCESSORIES
I know, I know! No high heels when you're pregnant. Maybe it's the Victoria Beckham in me, but I can't quit these! Wedges do the trick, are a lot more stable than stillies and everyone around me can sweat it out while I hold on to them. Some of my faves: Nike, and my beloved BCBG leopards that instantly dress anything up! Also, if I don't wear earrings, I feel naked! Accessories are so great during this time because they really dress up ho hum maternity fashion and give you that extra festive feel and always fit! I love chunky necklaces, watches, scarves, hats, belts (empire high on your waist or under your belly) for dramatic lines. Have fun with it, check out Baublebar.com to get started!

7)THE SECRET WEAPON
The bolero knit shirt- Mastermind sis stylist Marisol, (her style rivals Kate Moss & Rachel Zoe combined) had a sleepless night early in my pregnancy because she was stressing about what I would wear in the last months. She didn't want me to "get lost" in fabric and wanted to emphasize the parts of me that were still smallish; arms, torso, neck, earlobes :). She presented me with a bolero cut ribbed black top from Zara. At first I was confused because it seemed like something one would wear to a hot Soho party to show off a MaZi tummy but she quickly explained that I would be wearing over it flowy tops and dresses to create instant empire waists. Pure Brilliance. Check out the result here:

8) OILS
Stretch marks are not news, and yes, most of what happens is hereditary but isn't it worth you putting on a good fight?! I try to put my oils/creams on at least twice a day and more if I get itchy. I have found that I prefer oils because they seem to get absorbed better by the skin and I don't have to use as much. Sometimes I do both oil first and finish off with a cream, especially because it's winter. Some of my favorites: L'Occitane Almond Oil (Huile Souplesse) $40, Johnson's Baby Oil $4 in shower, Palmer's Cocoa Butter ($18). I think many products are similar and hard to get it wrong. Key here is consistency in use!

9) BALLERINA BUMP SHOOT
It's an interesting time, you want to capture what's going on but also are having a hard time reconciling what's going on with your body. Nothing makes you feel prettier than having an amazing photographer capture your glow and bump!  Monika Pawlak, of Better Looking Photography is a pro in form, function and beauty! She knows exactly how to capture your best angles. If there's one thing I would recommend every pregnant woman do it's to capture your belly with a trusted professional. You can reach Monika here. #monikamagic

10)YOUR HEART
Finally, your support system- This is a great time to get rid of toxic, negative people. Surround yourself with good people that love you and make you feel beautiful inside and out.  Partners, spouses, family, friends...your support system needs to do just that at this time so that you can get through this with positive energy. Don't feel guilty putting yourself first for once because it's not about you right now, it's actually about your baby!

Do any of you mommies have any must-share tips?!  Please share with us. :)

XO
- Zi

Note: As always, check with your doc before using/doing any of this as you generally need a Dr.'s note to drink water at this time. ;)
